7月6日 July 4thShe is a girl China born and China bred,
waiting for the fireworks in the United States this Fourth.
She wears a pinto dress, the better to brave the July
and sway her colors while she came up north.
At first she stands on tiptoe in the dusk.
Then she sits on the topgallant kerbed perch,
its vantage point, the view she has up there
of bay and the bridges and an anchor.
But as the fireworks is bursting in the sky,
She bends and mumbles "it's ancient Cathay wit."
"What I want," she crosses her fingers and tells a wish,
"is to revive my coutry's old glory,
our own 'Star Spangled Banner' for liberty, Holy Grail
of Nation blessed by freedom and prosperity."
Embracing past and present,
the faith she believes by heart.
Within her I shall find myself -
The "she" that reaches me everywhere.
